About Ege Basalt
The »Basalt« typeface itself was a simplified version of the »Ege-Schrift«, also designed by Eduard Ege in 1921 and published by Genzsch & Heyse. Initially, both typefaces were exclusively all-caps. In 1934, »Basalt« was enhanced with a lowercase alphabet, which has unfortunately been largely lost to time. The only surviving example of the lowercase letters is found in a flyer distributed in the Netherlands during World War II, showcasing the letters a, c, g, h, i, n, r, s, u, and w. Drawing inspiration from the design principles of these surviving letters, type designer Lena Schmidt crafted the remaining lowercase letters, resulting in a complete alphabet.
