About Uppercut Angle
Joachim Müller-Lancé’s Uppercut Angle is a rather sporting fellow, inspired by the popular self-defense system Krav Maga. The design’s shapes are not calligraphic or handwritten, but more like lettering seen in comics or sports logos. Its brush movements are imagined, not literal. During development, details were simplified and reduced until a cut-paper feel had emerged, but more fluid like writing. Uppercut Angle is decidedly analog, muscular but not bulky, with the fluid, determined movements of a boxer or martial artist — not theatrical but powerful, confident, and dynamic. In the proportions, there is emphasis on the upper edge while some stems duck below the baseline.
