Although Dave Bailey’s superfamily Discourse references classic reverse-contrast wood type, it re-interprets the forms into something new and distinctly neo-modern. Discourse’s heavy weights concentrate on creating the highest visual impact with the darkest color possible. The thick horizontal strokes create strong word shapes and the consistent color and rhythm creates a pleasantly even block of type. The three light weights are the opposite extreme, completely shedding the weight of the horizontal strokes that characterizes the heavy weights. Every one of the Light and Heavy weights have their own shadow, outline and fill versions that can be layered for a dazzling chromatic effect.
